Most people believe democracy is a uniquely just form of government. They believe people have the right to an equal share of political power. And they believe that political participation is good for us–it empowers us, helps us get what we want, and tends to make us smarter, more virtuous, and more caring for one another. These are some of our most cherished ideas about democracy. But, Jason Brennan says, they are all wrong.
In this trenchant book, Brennan argues that democracy should be judged by its results–and the results are not good enough. Just as defendants have a right to a fair trial, citizens have a right to competent government. But democracy is the rule of the ignorant and the irrational, and it all too often falls short. Furthermore, no one has a fundamental right to any share of political power, and exercising political power does most of us little good. On the contrary, a wide range of social science research shows that political participation and democratic deliberation actually tend to make people worse–more irrational, biased, and mean. Given this grim picture, Brennan argues that a new system of government–epistocracy, the rule of the knowledgeable–may be better than democracy, and that it’s time to experiment and find out.
A challenging critique of democracy and the first sustained defense of the rule of the knowledgeable, Against Democracy is essential reading for scholars and students of politics across the disciplines.

Can’t judge democracy based on the fact that it has all been representative. It should be clear by now that these so called “representatives” haven’t been responding to the policies that the public supports for a long time. Therefore, democracy cannot be blamed on the lack of democracy.
Plus, we already live in a technocracy (look into any sector, from banking to healthcare), which is an epistocracy. I have seen no one argue that we should expand the type of systems from US healthcare to speculative finance to all sectors (because these systems clearly aren’t for the benefit of the mass of society - they’re to benefit a small group of people).
The whole point of a democracy is power relations. His suggestion is that the power should stay with the financial elite. My suggestion is that it should be shifted to the mass of society with a direct democracy (actually getting to vote on policies rather than only on so called representatives).

Wow sounds great Robbie. I am armed and well trained no family to worry about and if I die at least I had fun. Kind of sucks for the elderly the sick and the weak though. Without even exploring the overall work, I see the problem: Who decides who the knowledgeable people are?
Perhaps we should design a system where we frequently ask the general public if they think the people in power are demonstrating adequate knowledge of what matters to them? Current representative democracies are already epistocracies?
Also, not very original. The concept of epistocracy goes back at least as far as the Philosopher-King(s) of Plato’s Republic. The ideas have been around for a very long time and have not been successful, in contrast to democracy. Over here in reality, the degree of democracy in a given society or nation is highly correlated with the overall standard of living.
