“One of the greatest thinkers of our age” (The Guardian) presents a new way of living—one modeled on nature’s design instead of capitalism’s—for fans of Guns, Germs, and Steel and Doughnut Economics
It has often been said that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism—and yet that is what the historical moment urgently calls for. As climate chaos, inequality, and social fragmentation intensify, humanity faces an imminent choice: continue with a system built on extraction and endless growth, or reimagine civilization itself. Incremental policy improvements are no longer enough—we need a deep transformation of our current civilization to continue to survive.
In Ecocivilization, leading thinker Jeremy Lent offers that reimagination, grounded in proven design principles of ecosystems and in humankind’s evolved inclination toward justice, mutuality, and dignity.
What unfolds is a robust framework incorporating Lent’s own expertise, and the lived experiences of those on the ground already putting ecological civilization’s core tenets into practice—justice, mutuality, diversity, and symbiosis.
From the global economy to universal housing and income, from infrastructure to agriculture, every major aspect of our society could be redesigned to work together as a coherent whole, setting the conditions for all people to flourish. Ecocivilization shows how this future on a regenerated Earth is not only desirable, but entirely feasible.

Thank you. Many of his ideas/band-aids will help some people postpone and reduce various amounts of suffering and death dates.
Unfortunately, The humans are a malignant cancer ($-via evolution & thermodynamics-$) and are unlikely to make it out of this century. I have no regrets about choosing to not have kids and I sometimes feel lucky and grateful I got 60 years in before the ongoing great decline/poly-crisis reaches full blown collapse of civilization and biosphere {Biosphere to a level of decline and impoverishment that no longer supports the majority of humans}.
I’ll share a recent and accurate update of some of the big predicaments the humans are facing (most people are still in various forms of minimization, denial and/or magical thinking).

**El Niño Lands on a System Already Collapsing**
*The real story is a global system already losing resilience.*
Adrian Lambert

Editor’s note: El Niño is arriving with unusual force. Here, I look at where the impacts are likely to land hardest, why the timing matters, and what practical steps we can take as the system loses more of its resilience.
1. Introduction
For several years now, the ocean has been running hot without properly cooling off between events. Food and energy prices rose after the last set of shocks and never fully came back down. Fertiliser and energy markets are still recovering from recent disruption through the Gulf. Arctic sea ice recorded its lowest winter maximum, and early summer extent was among the lowest on record. Stacked together, these have burned through the buffer the global system used to have when a bad year hit.
That’s the backdrop El Niño is arriving into……

“Nature abhors a gradient” — Dorian Sagan, INTO THE COOL.

“The destruction of the natural world is not the result of global capitalism, industrialisation, “Western civilisation” or any flaw in human institutions. It is a consequence of the evolutionary success of an exceptionally rapacious primate. Throughout all of history and prehistory, human advance has coincided with ecological devastation.” — John Gray, STRAW DOGS

Although there are many humans behaving badly, especially elites, in the big picture there is no blame. No humans intended for climate change and biosphere collapse to happen - they are by products of humans behaving the way they evolved to behave. By their very nature humans evolved to never be satisfied and always want more, whether that be material goodies, security, money, power or knowledge. All these band-aids look fine, until one understands Jevon’s paradox (EG: LED lighting) and that we are all gradient reducers (no choice) with no evolved brakes.
