The world has always been fascinated with ancient Egypt. When the Romans conquered Egypt, it was really Egypt that conquered the Romans. Cleopatra captivated both Caesar and Marc Antony and soon Roman ladies were worshipping Isis and wearing vials of Nile water around their necks. What is it about ancient Egypt that breeds such obsession and imitation? Egyptomania explores the burning fascination with all things Egyptian and the events that fanned the flames—from ancient times, to Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb by Howard Carter in the 1920s.
For forty years, Bob Brier, one of the world’s foremost Egyptologists, has been amassing one of the largest collections of Egyptian memorabilia and seeking to understand the pull of ancient Egypt on our world today. In this original and groundbreaking book, he explores our three-thousand-year-old fixation with recovering Egyptian culture and its meaning. He traces our enthrallment with the mummies that seem to have cheated death and the pyramids that seem as if they will last forever.
Drawing on his personal collection—from Napoleon’s twenty volume Egypt encyclopedia to Howard Carter’s letters written from the Valley of the Kings as he was excavating—this is an

Brilliant, Gooms. In amongst all the toxic ideological garbage, you’ve come up with the gold. Bob’s two lecture series on Egypt, & his many interviews, are also really worth checking out.

I try for variety. People’s tastes vary and what I may not appreciate is (as you say) gold to another. It is fun to stir the pot once in awhile, though. On the rare occasion, there are comments that make me realize that ABB does have some intelligent lifeforms.

Indiana Dunbar, more like. If you go to Rome, much of the ancient city is now below street level, so you can do a lot of subterranean, archaeological adventuring. Basilica San Clemente is partic amazing. A beautiful 12th c church - on top of remains of 2 earlier churches - one from 4th c, converted out of patrician home, part of which had served in the 1st c as an early church, & basement which in 2nd c served as a Mithraeum (Pagan temple). Home of the nobleman had been built on foundations of a republican era villa & warehouse - destroyed in the Great Fire of AD 64.
You descend into the depths, travelling thru time at each level, discovering another world. There’s a shrine to St. Cyril, inventor of Cyrillic script & alphabet.
If you suffer from claustrophobia, you might not want to linger longer. You’ll be able to hear & discover an underground river, which once flowed into the lake of Nero’s palace (lake is gone, replaced by Colosseum).
We also did some of that delving in Jerusalem, walking the watery length of Hezekiah’s Tunnel. It was mentioned in the Bible, & was presumed not to exist until it was excavated. Israelite engineers accomplished this feat around late 8th & early 7th c BC in preparation for an impending Assyrian siege. They redirected the waters to the City of David.
Great stuff for the history buff.
