Leading military historian Victor Davis Hanson returns to non-fiction in The Savior Generals, a set of brilliantly executed pocket biographies of five generals who single-handedly saved their nations from defeat in war. War is rarely a predictable enterprise–it is a mess of luck, chance, and incalculable variables. Today’s sure winner can easily become tomorrow’s doomed loser. Sudden, sharp changes in fortune can reverse the course of war.
These intractable circumstances are sometimes mastered by leaders of genius–asked at the eleventh hour to save a hopeless conflict, created by others, often unpopular with politics and the public. These savior generals often come from outside the established power structure, employ radical strategies, and flame out quickly. Their careers often end in controversy. But their dramatic feats of leadership are vital slices of history–not merely as stirring military narrative, but as lessons on the dynamic nature of consensus, leadership, and destiny.

Junk.
Including Iraq ($2 trillion+ so far) & disgraced general Petraeus nulls what little creditability Hanson had as a historian. He’s a full time MIC shill - Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution which is a front group for American right-wing oligarchs, climate denial, more bloody American imperialism - the usual suspects. Hanson also writes for a number of conservative media rags.

He’s a political mouth piece, which is fine if that’s your passion, but you don’t get to do that all day then in the evening pretend you are an objective historian. You can’t be both & expect to be taken seriously. Conflict of interest writ large. He’s a glorified imperial apologist & propagandist.

Thanks for the upload of this rather important book, rmoor.
To criticise Hanson for his bias, his racism, or his limited tolerance for traditional democratic values, seems to me to misunderstand his relevance as a cultural commentator.
Thomas Carlyle was just as dishonest, bigoted and myopic: but no-one can understand the British 19th C without at least some handle on his ‘Occasional Discourse’.
Decency and integrity won’t always cut it (especially now, and especially in USia): you need to know how the monsters think.
Again, thank you, rmoor, for this necessary tome.

Don’t so lightly skip over (the old authoritarian airbrush?) the legions of useful eejits of the 20th Century - sleazy apologists, racists, intolerant monsters, all. Decency & integrity in very short supply, as we know, amongst that ideological midden. Still the case, of course.
