According to even the most conservative estimates, China will overtake the United States as the world’s largest economy by 2027 and will ascend to the position of world economic leader by 2050. But the full repercussions of China’s ascendancy - for itself and the rest of the globe - have been surprisingly little explained or understood.
In this far-reaching and original investigation, Martin Jacques offers provocative answers to some of the most pressing questions about China’s growing place on the world stage. Martin Jacques reveals, by elaborating on three historical truths, how China will seek to shape the world in its own image. The Chinese have a rich and long history as a civilization-state. Under the tributary system, outlying states paid tribute to the Middle Kingdom. Ninety-four percent of the population still believes they are one race - “Han Chinese.” The strong sense of superiority rooted in China’s history promises to resurface in 21st century China and in the process strengthen and further unify the country.
A culturally self-confident Asian giant with a billion-plus population, China will likely resist globalization as we know it. This exceptionalism will have powerful ramifications for the rest of the world and the United States in particular. As China is already emerging as the new center of the East Asian economy, the mantle of economic and, therefore, cultural relevance will in our lifetimes begin to pass from Manhattan and Paris to cities like Beijing and Shanghai. It is the American relationship with and attitude toward China, Jacques argues, that will determine whether the 21st century will be relatively peaceful or fraught with tension, instability, and danger.
When China Rules the World is the first book to fully conceive of and explain the upheaval that China’s ascendance will cause and the realigned global power structure it will create.

Thanks for the share.
Never ceases to amaze me that these authors don’t understand the effect of changing population demographics. Kinda hard to be an economic world leader in a demographic collapse.
I predict the next book of this kind will be on India. Continuing the tradition of books on unstable countries that will ‘certainly’ be the new world power: Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Post-War Japan, and now China.

Shen jin bing. (OK, my pinyin sucks).
China is not a peaceful caring partner of the future, its objective is the long-term domination of the world.
Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn’t spent so much as ten minutes in China.
I’ve lived on the mainland for years, married a mainlander and have no such illusions.
The Chinese people are lovely, but they are not China, the CCP is and it wants you gone, so it can have what you have.

If your name was “Martin Jacques” this is the sort of analysis you would be expected to dream up. End-ism sells! Ugh.

Ah, yes. The CCP. The most right wing capitalist and least Marxist communist party ever.

Mao was a serious Marxist: “People say that poverty is bad, but in fact poverty is good. The poorer people are, the more revolutionary they are. It is dreadful to imagine a time when everyone will be rich.”
“To read too many books is harmful.”
“Many who have read Marxist books have become renegades from the revolution, whereas illiterate workers often grasp Marxism very well.”
“When there is not enough to eat, people starve to death. It is better to let half of the people die so that the other half can eat their fill.”
“Deaths have benefits. They can fertilise the ground.”
“Communism is not love. Communism is a hammer which we use to crush the enemy.”
“Everything under heaven is in utter chaos; the situation is excellent.”
And they’ve retained the brutal authoritarianism (The necessity of “concentrated terror” as Marx referred to it).

“I, for one, welcome our [X] overlords.” is a tongue in cheek meme. The use of this line in this context suggests that iaudiophile is entirely aware of who and what the CCP is and is being sarcastic.
Here is the line being used in the Simpsons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4jWAwUb63c

China could disappear tomorrow, but that won’t change the fact that America is a collapsing banana republic full of ignorant degenerates.
American decline—>collapse is self inflicted. 100% home grown. Garbage in garbage out.

For the last 70 years we’ve been living under the soulless and degenerate world order created by America Inc. and many like me have wondered how the world would be like if the Germans and Japanese won the war. Well, with the rise of China we’re finally going to find out.
And I for one truly welcome it.

@Caesar ‘Mao was a serious Marxist:…”
He died almost 50 years ago. Deng reversed course and made China rich.
The CCP is Marxist in name only now.
It’s Marxist in the same way the US GOP is conservative, it provides slogans and there certainly are some believers, but no one at the top cares about anything except simple power.

True enough, G - the economics didn’t work & were truly ruinous, which even required a rebrand for death itself as being something of a positive.
They had to embrace a version of controlled market economics: “To get rich is glorious.” as Deng Xiaoping said.
Power as the main motivator - that hasn’t changed, of course. And they’ve retained the brutal authoritarianism, as witnessed by the Uyghur people, the protestors of Tiananmen Square, the population of Hong Kong, and everyone else who is a victim of the grinding apparatus of terror.
The American Republicans straying from conventional conservatism is an interesting point; it’s interesting to reflect on what they’ve actually strayed into.
